Lymphoma: A Form of Cancer of the Lymph.

     Lymphoma is a form of cancer that affect the immune system. Specifically, it is a cancer that affect the immune cell called lymphocytes a type of white blood cell. It is a group of blood cell tumours that develop from lymphocytes. There are many types of lymphoma. One type is Hodgkin disease. Whereas the rest are called non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

     Non-Hodgkin lymphomas begins when a type of white blood cell, called T cell or B cell, becomes abnormal. The cell divides again and again, making more and more abnormal cell. This abnormal cells can spread to almost every other part of the body. Most of the time Doctors don't know why a person gets Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. You are at increased risk if you have a weakened immune system or have certain type of infections.





                                  Symptoms of Lymphoma.

 


     The symptoms which can be seen on the onset of Non Hodgkin's and Hodgkin's lymphoma are as follows:
     There are many symptoms associated with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma such as;
     * Swollen painless lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin.
     * Pains, swelling or a feeling of fullness in the abdomen.
     * Unexplained weight loss.
     * Severe weakness and tiredness that will never go away.
     * Fever
     * Coughing, trouble breathing or chest pain.
     * Soaking night sweats.



                     Who is Affected by Lymphoma Disease

 


     Non Hodgkin's lymphoma is the seventh most common form of lymphoma in men; whereas in women it is in the region of sixth position in terms of commonness. Every year about 5000 new cases of this ailment are said to be develop in men and about 4500 of such cases are found in women.

    This condition is usually diagnosed amongst people over the age bracket of 50 years and is thus more commonly found in adult than in youngsters. More of this cases are found in people who are prone to radiation exposure.(radiotherapy and nuclear accidents) regular chemical exposure (to herbicides and insecticides) and reduced immunity. Old age also increases the risk of acquiring this disease, while some genetic diseases result in the abnormal immune system of the children born with lymphoma.



                               Prevention of Lymphoma

 


     Strengthening the immune system, avoiding the regular exposure to the harmful chemical and radioactive elements would help in reducing the risk of acquiring lymphoma. The body system is a member of lymphoma, the patient suffering from immune disorder like the case of HIV are at an extremely high risk of acquiring lymphoma. Certain drugs and medications also lead to the increase occurrence of lymphoma.




Treatment For Lymphoma


     On the whole, it is the Hodgkin's lymphoma that can be treated and cured with success. The main treatment used for treating this ailment are in the form of, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, steroids, growth factors and intensive treatments which employ high dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy in combination with the bone marrow or stem cell transplant.
   
     In cases of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the treatment are in the form of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, biological therapy, steroids, intensive chemotherapy or surgery. Though the disease of lymphoma scares people from all race, and in every society, treatment in time can help cure the mild forms of this condition, while stemming the tide of this ailment and bring it to bare and under control.
